LIVE RECORDING
Jackie Daly - Noel Hill - Nomos
========================
I came across a CD recently that I had forgotten about - a recording of several live performances, evidently in Ireland. "1980" is written on
the (handwritten) tune list, but the presence of Nomos (see below) indicates that not all the performances were recorded at the same time.
I don't recall who gave me the CD. (Maybe Ed Kane?) One thing is for sure - there's some great music on there.
The first two tracks are box player Jackie Daly and an unspecified fiddler. The majority of the tracks are performances by the great Clare
concertina player Noel Hill, and the final tracks are by a group called Nomos, described as follows by Wikipedia:
"Cork-based Nomos were an Irish traditional music band during the 1990s. The group formed in 1990 and consisted of Niall Vallely on concertina, Vince Milne on fiddle, Frank Torpey on bodhran, Gerry McKee on bouzouki, and Eoin Coughlan on vocals and bass."
Jackie Daly and Noel Hill are still playing, but I think Nomos came and went after a few years (not surprising considering the frenetic pace of their playing).
Here's the playlist - most of the tunes are easily recognized, I had to supply the names for some of the others, and a few I recognized but didn't recall the names. The Nomos selections are almost all new to me (some are probably original compositions by band members).
Keep in mind as you listen that this isn't a studio-quality recording by any means. It does however do a great job of capturing what we all love
best about irish traditional music!

HUGH GILLESPIE - Topic 12T364
============================
Hugh Gillespie [1906 - 1986] was born in Ballybofey, Co. Donegal. He emigrated to the US in 1928 and settled in the New York area, where he worked as an engineer for the local electric company. He became a protegé of Michael Coleman and performed regularly with him over the years. These recordings are from the years 1937 - 1939 and clearly demonstrate that Gillespie deserves his place alongside Coleman, Morrison, and Killoran in the pantheon of great Sligo-style fiddlers.
Gillespie returned to Ballybofey and passed away there in 1986. His son Hughie remained a firm supporter of the New York Irish music scene (and a personal friend of mine) until his own passing a few years back.

JOHNNY CRONIN and JOE "BANJO" BURKE
==========================================
Recorded in 1976 and released (LP only - no CD) by Shanachie (#29005). Now out of print.
Johnny (from Kerry) and Joe (from Kilkenny) were great NY musicians in the 70's and 80's who played at any pub that featured traditional music, including the legendary Bunratty on Kingsbridge Avenue in the Bronx. Joe was also a fine singer with a great baritone voice that could be heard for miles. Sadly neither are still with us; Johnny died in 1991 and Joe in 2003.
I was privileged to have known and played with both men, and was also honored to be able to say a few words at Joe's induction into the Comhaltas Northeast Hall of Fame shortly before his death (from Parkinson's disease).

JOE COOLEY
=============
These cuts are from a tape made at a pub ceili somewhere in Ireland. Not the greatest sound quality but you get a good idea of Joe's playing style. I don't know the date of this recording or who the banjo player is.
There's one track that I had to scrub because of EBN syndrome [= Excessive Bodhrán Noise]. The player isn't bad but he's obviously seated closer to the microphone than Joe is. I tried a lot of tricks to get rid of - or at least balance - the sound, but nothing worked.

KATHLEEN COLLINS
====================
Traditional Music of Ireland (Shanachie 29002 from 1976, reissued as 34010 in 1995 and still available)
Accompanist: Jimmy Mahon
Kathleen (sister of Shanachie's Dan) is a fine fiddler and dance teacher who lives in the New York area. As these tracks make abundantly clear, she was exposed to the "New York Sligo style" of fiddling as exemplified by Lad O'Beirne, Louis Quinn, Andy McGann, Paddy Reynolds, and other exponents. Kathleen was the first American-born fiddler to win the All-Ireland(1966) and has numerous other competition awards to her credit.
To my knowledge, this is the only recording Kathleen made until quite recently. I like it because of its great selection of tunes. The piano accompaniment is generally unobtrusive - although I would question a few chord choices here and there, the backup doesn't get in the way of the soloist as happens so often (e.g. Michael Coleman).
In recent years Kathleen has turned her attention more towards the dance aspect of her teaching abilities, but I'm pleased to pass along the fact that she has finally done another recording (late 2009 - early 2010). I don't know the details but if you're interested, google Kathleen Collins and see what happens.
I am including this recording in the Tune Vault because of the lamentable fact that the track listings on the re-issue appear to have been totally fouled up. Of course Amazon and other suppliers - not knowing any better - have followed suit, with the result that (e.g.) the track listed as "Reavy's - Jenny's Welcome to Charlie" is in fact "Dowd's Favorite - Star of Munster".
Naturally this kind of screw-up can't be of any help to musicians trying to learn the tunes, so I'm going to take a chance and include this recording in the Tune Vault. If it suddenly disappears, you'll know that somebody has suggested that I remove it!

LEG of the DUCK - Shaskeen OS362, cassette tape, 1992
============================================
Joe Burke, accordion
Michael Cooney, pipes
Noreen O Donoghue, harp
Mike Rafferty, flute
Paddy Rafferty, lilting
This recording is a great example of Joe's unequalled box playing on tunes that should be in every traditional musician's repertoire. Unfortunately Cooney, a great musician in his own right, can barely be heard in the duets with Joe, but his solo track (the air "Táimse 'mo Choladh" and reel "Colonel Frazer") gives us at least a taste for his playing. Also unfortunate in my thinking is the use of the harp as a backup instrument for dance tunes, a practice I find adds little - and often takes away a great deal - from otherwise excellent music. Noreen O. might be a fine solo harpist but you wouldn't know it from this recording.
Nice to hear the Rafferty brothers on there too - Paddy (RIP) was as they say a great man for the lilting, and Mike (also sadly RIP) is ... well, he's Mike, God bless him.
The liner notes for this cassette are scanty at best but mention is made somewhere of a follow-up CD release of this recording. Google turned up nothing and a shopping link from session.org went nowhere, so I'm presuming that no CD ever materialized and that the cassette is out of print.

"WE'RE IRISH STILL"
==================
self-produced LP, Boston 1981
This recording was made in 1981 under the guidance of Séamus Connolly. It features various members of the Hanafin-Cooley CCE branch, presided over then as now by Larry Reynolds.
The recording is interesting not so much for the quality of the playing - most of which is excellent, some of which is not quite - as for its historical value in preserving performances by musicians who have since gone to the Great Session in the Sky.
Also to be noted - as a great credit to Larry and Seamus - is the fact that a number of the musicians to be heard on this LP are still actively performing and teaching in the Boston area, in effect doing exactly as the word "tradition" demands in passing down their knowledge of, and love for, the music to another generation.
The sound quality is what you might expect from various musicians at various skill levels playing in various venues. Considering the fact that recording techniques in 1981 were nowhere near what they are now - studio or live - this LP represents as much a labor of love as anything else, and I'm very pleased to be able to include it in the Tune Vault. (Thanks to Diane Maranchie for doing the vinyl-to-digital conversion.)

MARTIN MULVIHILL
TRADITIONAL FIDDLING FROM COUNTY LIMERICK - Green Linnet 1012
with Mick Moloney, guitar and banjo
=============================================================
This recording was made in 1978 and is long out of print. Compass Records, who presently owns the Green Linnet catalog, has given no indication of any interest in reissuing this material.
Martin Mulvihill was born in Moyvane, Co. Limerick in 1928, and spent time in the UK before moving to the NYC area. He learned fiddle from his mother and took advantage of the presence of many fine musicians in the Limerick / North Kerry areas to develop a large repertoire of tunes, including many of the slides and polkas that are normally associated with the Sliabh Luachra area of Kerry further south. These musicians are commemorated in many of the tune names included on the recording.
Mulvihill was perhaps best known as a teacher, and many great players in the tradition today undertook their early musical education at Martin's school in the Bronx. His son Brendan and daughters Gail and Dawn are also fine musicians in their own right. Martin was also a fine composer - his tunes are marked with an asterisk in the track list below.
The tune collection that bears Mulvihill's name was never commercially circulated and is hard to find today. Not surprisingly, it also includes many tunes not found anywhere else. My WebABC site has a section devoted to the tunes in the Mulvihill collection.
Mulvihill passed away in 1987 on a trip home to Ireland.
Tunes in following marked with * are Martin's own compositions. (ABCs for these can be found
in my webABC site.)
